Imagine you have been hired to direct a performance of an ancient Greek play (i.e. a specific tragedy by Aeschylus, Sophocles or Euripides or comedy by Aristophanes). Write an essay explaining your interpretation of the play and the details of how you would produce it. Your essay should touch on as many aspects of the production as possible: the set and staging, advice you would give the actors on their characters, costumes and props, lighting, sound design, etc. Discuss specific moments and scenes from the play and how they would look and sound in your production. You can choose any of the plays we discussed in class or any other of the plays by one of these four playwrights (remember: Sophocles’ Oedipus the King and Antigone are included in the e-textbook for the course). Your response should: • be typed, with a title, and have your name on it; • be coherently structured and persuasively argued; • be approximately 1,250 words long (approx. 2 typed pages); • contain accurate referencing and formatting using APA style.
