Initial Post
As a student nurse, one of your first assignments is with an elderly client. As you are helping with her care, you hear a discussion between this senior woman and her husband. She says that she does not want any more treatments and instead wants only comfort measures and to start services with hospice. Her husband shares that he doesn’t think that is a good idea. Both of them turn to you and ask, “What do you think?”
- Describe three ethical principles associated with this controversial healthcare situation.
- Explain how five of the nine provisions of the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses relate to and could impact your decision on how to respond to this family.
Response Posts
Response Post 1: After you have described three ethical principles, find a post from a colleague that identified at least one principle that you did not discuss. Explore why those principles were selected in the context of this situation. Compare and contrast your point of view with the post of your colleague.
Response Post 2: You selected five of the possible nine provisions of the ANA Code of Ethics. Share your insights with a colleague that chose a different provision. Explore why they decided to focus on the ANA Code of Ethics provisions that you did not in this scenario. Share your thoughts on how you agree or disagree with your colleague’s post and share your rationale.
Please make your initial post by midweek, and respond to at least two other student’s post by the end of the week. All posts require references AND in-text citations in full APA format. Information must be paraphrased and not quoted. Please check the Course Calendar for specific due dates. NOTE: Finalized postings must be submitted by deadlines. Any edits after deadline will be counted as late submissions and deducted accordingly. If you need to make any corrections for clarity’s sake only, you can write an addendum as a reply to yourself. The initial post will still be the one receiving full grade.
